For many indigenous peoples across the globe, life is changing. Centuries-old traditions are being altered by political change and economic development. Highways are replacing old trade routes, pavement covers foot-worn paths, and ancient rituals are lost as technological advances eliminate their role in daily life. This process represents more than the loss of traditions and pastimes; it represents the disappearance of peope who live in deep harmony with nature. Award winning photographer Jan Reynolds invites readers to experience the daily life of children from various cultures through stunning photographs and simple narratives. Covering vast reaches of the world, the Vanishing cultures series documents ways of life that are quickly disappearing. Travel with Jan as she solos over the Himalaya from Nepal to Tibet in the Everest region, on a trade journey over the Nanpa La, the highest trade pass in existence. Sherpas and Tibetans still travel this route to barter and trade, crossing this 20,000 foot pass on foot and with yak caravans. We meet the Sherpas, and learn how they came to live in the Everest region, and what their traditional lifestyle entails. We also explore the changes in their lives since the influx of foreign visitors from around the world, for trekking and climbing. Through this glimpse of the Sherpa's culture we involve each of the 18 national standards for geography.
